Detailed Narrative Description of Project

The project supports development and implementation of the new green economic approaches and practices in tourism, livestock and fruit and vegetables in Kyrgyzstan. These sectors are part of the National Export Plan and are characterized with high potential for employment and income generation and promotion of green economic practices and approaches in the country. Priority regions for the implementation of the project are Osh and Issyk-Kul.

In the early vegetables value chain operating in Nooken rayon of Jalal Abad oblast the programme supported the creation of business modalities for providing services/advice in marketing, pruning and spraying, and regular supply channels for vegetable seedlings have been established. In the organic dried plums value chain which is mostly operating in Aksy rayon of Jalal Abad oblast, the project has contributed to the creation of a business modality for the organic production and processing (drying, de-pitting, packaging) of plums.

In this phase of the project,  SDC contributed to the GESPSD by providing the means to enhance production and processing capacity as well as to improve market access for selected value chains. In this way the programme intends to contribute to a strengthened private sector, which leads to job creation, economic growth and, ultimately, poverty reduction. The SDC contribution specifically supports the local producers and entrepreneurs in two southern regions of the Kyrgyz Republic - Jalal Abad, and Batken - to improve their competitiveness through adoption and adaptation of sustainable and innovative approaches in selected value chains (objective). Improved competitiveness will lead to better income prospects and use of sustainable and innovative approaches will contribute to newer job possibilities along the value chain.

Detailed Narrative Description of Services provided

Task 1: The members of formal and/or informal organisations /networks structures in the project regions have increased their operational efficiency.

TA will be provided to the management of cooperatives in Burgondu and Aksy to improve their services and sustainability. Support in organizing, managing, marketing and developing the Burgondu co-operative’s business modality to increase the number of cooperative members and effective use of the logistic centre especially in wintertime. The measures should increase efficiency in the Early Vegetable Sector.

Task 2: Quality and safety standards are applied by Local producers and Entrepreneurs. In Kyrgyzstan cheap plant protection chemicals are widely used. Farmers hold a belief that the more they use active chemicals the more protected their plants will be. With inconsiderate number of sprayings farmers end up harvesting produce with a high content of chemical residues potentially endangering the lives of their consumers. In this regard promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) principles alongside a traceability system will be an important focus for the second phase of the project - promotion of organic production in suitable sectors.

Task 3: Demand-driven value chain related services are permanently accessible in the project region. Strengthen existing services by enlarging their scope, and in parallel invest in enriching the service pool by making available new demand-driven services such as agricultural advice and marketing, business planning, operational planning, processing equipment sourcing, leasing, business development and preparing for trade fairs in the project region.
