Detailed Narrative Description of Project | This project is part of the project for the reconstruction of the Issyk-Kul ring road on the Korumdu-Balbay section (about 80.5 km). This project will provide:
The project, the 32.2 km section of the Tyup - Karakol road, consists of an extension of the road from two lanes to four lanes. Potential environmental and social risks associated with the project include: potential impacts on biodiversity (the project is located in the buffer zone of the Issyk-Kul biosphere and is adjacent to an important bird area), management of a significant amount of waste dump, impacts on water quality during bridge construction, proximity to residential buildings and cemeteries along the road (noise and vibration). Physical relocation is expected to be small, however, this may affect agricultural activities.
ESIA is carried out at an early stage of the project (as the feasibility study and technical expertise will be carried out in parallel); this is seen as an opportunity to influence project design (eg avoidance of sensitive areas of biological, human or cultural heritage or resettlement), contribute to the analysis of alternatives and implement a mitigation matrix. |
