Detailed Narrative Description of Project | The TA was a project preparatory TA which assessed the economic and technical feasibility of electricity trade between Central Asia and South Asian countries through an initial project to export 100MW from Tajikistan/Kyrgyz Republic to Pakistan and Afghanistan. The project itself supported the Pakistan Government\'s strategy of increasing demand for electricity. The project enabled Tajikistan to earn revenues through better utilization of hydroelectric resources and Afghanistan was able to earn wheeling charges through the transmission line going through to Pakistan and have access to additional source of electricity. The techno-economic study assessed:
1. the availability and cost of power supply options in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan; 2. The need for power in Pakistan and the cost of alternatives to imports to satisfy these needs; Afghanistan’s ability to take and utilize additional power; 3. the transmission options, rout, and costs. It will also identify, as part of the foregoing, the technical risks to the project and the manner by which each may be mitigated; 4. Environmental and social impact assessments. |
